SMART – PATIENT PROTECTION – Sections C & D: Non-Latex Rubber Dam and Dam Sealer
A dental dam (47, 48, 49, 50, 51) that is made with non-latex nitrile material (52, 53, 54) should be placed and properly sealed in the patient’s mouth.
OPTIONAL ADD-ON: Read about how some dentists smear HgX cream on the dental dam before performing an amalgam removal to provide extra protection for the patient from mercury. Dentists also use HgX cream on their hands before donning their gloves to protect their skin from absorbing mercury. HgX cream can also be used on floor cleaners (such as a swiffer) to absorb and capture the mercury particles that settle onto the floor, which will continue to off gas mercury vapor into the dental operatory if not properly cleaned.
